The Jumps Season Stats published in The Racing Post on Tuesday 5th May 2009 for the 2008-2009 season show some pretty good results for Sheena.
Sheena's finishing strike rate was an amazing 19%! That was 9 winners out of 47 runs. To put it into context her strike rate of 19% was above that of Alan King, Phillip Hobbs, David Pipe and Jonjo O'Neill - amongst many other top trainers!
Sheena was also 96th in the overall prize money league table, now bearing in mind she wasn't always running in the biggest races (ie lower prize money) that wasn't a bad finishing place out of the 518 total NH trainers listed.
For those betting people amongst us, for a £1 stake on each of her horses running in the National Hunt season you would have grossed a profit of +72.10. That is an amazing accomplishment for a trainer who only has about 12 national hunt horses in training. She beat most of the top trainers with this stat hands down. Even to get a plus figure at the end of the season is what a trainer often dreams of let alone a plus figure of a healthy £72.10!
Let's hope the 2009-2010 season is just as successful for Sheena and her team. It certainly won't be for the lack of trying.
This might also be the time to mention that very talented stable jockey, Jamie Goldstein. Jamie managed to score a very respectable strike rate of 13% for the 2008-2009 season. That was for 9 wins out of 72 rides. Sheena thinks he really must try and improve this for the 2009-2010 season! ;0)
Again, to put this figure into some form of context Richard Johnson's strike rate was 16% and AP McCoy's 22%!
Come on Jamie, we need you to hit the 23%-25% strike rate in this coming season and (God willing) remain injury free!

Stan shaking hands with James Doyle. Sheena and Chris look on.
It was cold and blustery at Bath (the highest racecourse evidently in the UK!) on Wednesday afternoon. Although it was bright, the wind was biting and those brave ladies that turned up in their summer frocks and shoes - possibly saw the error of their dress sense just walking from the car park to the racecourse entrance!
Kashmina, owned by Heart of the South Racing was hovering around the 35/1 mark on the Tote approximately 3 minutes before the "off" which Sheena thought was a little surprising, and the write up in the programme (how can they cost £3.50?) and the Racing Post were also a little unkind. Just as well horses can't read sometimes.
James Doyle, a delightful, polite jockey listened intently to his instructions. It was clear he had done some homework too which is always rewarding for both the owners and of course the trainer.
Kashmina was thereabouts for most of the race, actually getting her head in front coming down the home straight. She finished a respectable 7th, with only about 2 lengths covering the 6 horses that finished in front of her. She galloped like she may need further and James said that he was sure she would pick up a race on todays performance.
The two owner's in attendance (Chris and Stan) appeared more than happy with the jockey, the horse and of course the trainer, who as always gave her honest opinion of the horses chances before the race.

===========
Waiting and waiting for a drop of rain for him to run. A very dry April followed a very dry March, but logic tells me that what's due always comes in the end, rain never doesn't come in this country only not when expected and in a couple of weeks the possibility of a soft ground Derby will be spoken about as in other years. He is ticking over well.
Last One Standing
=================
Very pleased with his return run at Plumpton over Easter, a beautiful horse and a real embryonic chaser he was having his first run for his new owner Mike Moriarty. I was trying to find an 'easy' bumper for him and failed dramatically. Although not many runners they were all nice horses with a future and he stayed on resolutely for 2nd under his penalty. He gave himself a harder race than we would have liked and when he's recovered from his exertions will run over hurdles. His cousin was Master Boston winner of 11 races and favourite for the Scottish national a few years back and the long term plan is that one day he will emulate him.
NEW!! Bay Hawk NEW!!
===================
Owned by Kathy Anderson who is responsible for this web site. Bay Hawk arrived here last month and is a lovely stamp of a horse. He has won a couple of hurdle races a year ago for Brendan Powell and has come here after a break and some deliberation that he might be better suited to a smaller yard. He will start cantering this month and at only 7 will hopefully get his racing career successfully back on track. Kathy has now syndicated him and they are all now looking forward to seeing Bay Hawk back on the race track.
Golan Way
=========
He is just fine, on his break and will be ready for a late summer/autumn campaign. I'm still very undecided which direction to take with him. Novice chasing is very appealing, but in light of American Trilogy's later exploits in could just be that there is a handicap hurdle or two be had with him. I'm against running him on the flat as he doesn't really settle for his races over hurdles, he just gallops flat out for 2 miles, which has done him well so far but he has no tactical speed which he would need on the flat, and he also needs to settle better if he is to get further over hurdles, going a stride slower is against his approach to racing and this will be further exacerbated by the fact that over hurdles he will only be able to run in good races next season and we won't be able to to have a quiet 'dipping your toe in the water' run. So all in all there is a lot to be said for sticking to what we do know until we have to do something different.
Tobago Bay
===========
Golan Way never really surprised us, always knew he was good.......Tobago Bay though is slightly different. We were always confident that he would pick up an early season juvenile, hence the trek to Sedgefield last summer. He has run some terrific races in defeat and then cantered around Plumpton over Easter, jumping immaculately throughout to win under a double penalty like a good horse should. I was very keen to give him an 'easy' race after 3 hard Cheltenham runs and to give him a confidence boost before he knew he needed his confidence boosting. Over hurdles life will be very tough for him now as he rated 139 and he will have no easy races anymore although his jumping is a huge asset for him and he has schooled over fences he is actually very tiny and for a little horse to hit a fence it takes more out of them than a big horse, therefore although not ruled out in future his chasing career can wait. Again he will get further over hurdles and it's possible that he will make up into a proper staying hurdler. In the meantime he has a low flat mark, which I have to admit seems to be creeping up without him actually winning, another 3 lb's for a very unlucky 2nd at Folkestone highlight this, but he can and will win on the flat and I would love to see him skip around Chester over 2 miles later this summer!
Hurdling, there is a 0-150 handicap at Market Rasen in August which will probably be his next jumps outing.
Place The Duchess
==================
I really like her and she's coming along very nicely. I'm sure we can do some good with her. The trouble with horses like her is her handicap mark which is 46. I'm sure she can do well and progress off of this mark. The problem being there is absolutely no room for error with placing her and finding the right race, she just cannot afford to drop a few pounds if she is to get in races let alone win them. She is still young and her mother who I also trained(Barrantes) did nothing but improve with age and I never did find her optimum trip. She won over 5, 6 and 7 furlongs but there does seem to be a combination of speed and stamina coming through and I'm hopeful we can do well with her.

Going really well and schooling well. Really hope her various issues stay away from her and she can show what she can do soon!
Kashmina
========
Blimey she takes and needs some work, but going well and will have a run on the flat beginning of May with a view to going back hurdling soon after, thoroughly genuine and a real trier she deserves a race or two to come her way over the summer months.
Itsawindup
==========
Unfortunately his flat rating has dropped, I think a little unfairly after I ran him in a stupid race at Folkestone. If you ever have a horse with me and I ever mention Hands and Heels races then please remind me of this. So he ran over hurdles at Wincanton to help WRB racing achieve their aim of having had a runner at every UK track. Despite my misgivings he actually ran really well, hopefully he has done enough to be given a mark which would make him competitive in handicap hurdles. He will never be a betting proposition as with on the flat everything needs to fall right for him on the day, but if he manages a hurdles win I will have a bigger soft spot for him than I do already!
Split the Wind
==============
She's going well now after pulling muscles in her back. Like Kashmina she needs a lot of work and like Place the Duchess there is not a lot of room for error. She will have some intensive schooling this month for hurdling and it will probably be the best way forward with her, she is sound and genuine and plenty big enough for jumping and by the time she's fully fit she should have a mark.
Mac Federal
===========
He's lovely, although a bit of a twit, being ticked over for the summer with a view to next winter, the race I'd really like to win with him is the Lanzorote and there is nothing like having a plan!
Paula and Dale
===============
I have to bracket them together as they are always together! Even more so now as Mike, Stuart and Philip have bought both of them to run in their yet to be decided colours. It seemed the best way as both horses have their pluses and minuses and which ever one they decided on could have been the wrong one. Both fillies are lovely types. Dale's schooling over tyres and hurdles and it's hard to see them not being racehorses for this season and for the future. I hope the new owner's have a lot of success with both of them.
Le Chiffre

Currently on the horsewalker and he will be re-assessed later this month as to whether he needs more time or can come back into work.

Tracy Hall left the yard this month. Wishing Tracy all the best for the future.
After staying in 3 different hospitals, and with the threat of operations on his dual pelvic fracture Marc Goldstein is now back at home in a downstairs bedroom! Getting around is proving a little difficult - as crutches were not an option bearing in mind he also has a broken ankle and a broken elbow.
He has been given the use of a zimmer frame (no sniggering please) with wheels attached - as his other injuries would now allow any other mode of transport!
Marc was seen trying to walk the dogs the other day - and then being in considerable pain on his return. These NH jockey's just don't know the meaning of the word REST do they! ;0)
Given Marc also suffered concussion and his teeth going through his bottom lip - it looks as if Marc could be away from the track for a few months!
On behalf of all the owner's, Sheena and her staff, Marc... Get Well Soon...and PLEASE get someone else to walk the dogs for a while!
Oh, and one final thing Marc, Carley doesn't work on Sundays - just in case you were thinking of phoning her again when she is in bed to tell her she is late for work!!! :0)
